SUPERHUMAN soldiers, energy weapons, cyber attacks, and hypersonic aircraft capable of launching nukes from space are poised to bring devastation to the battlefields of the future.
The race for the best weaponised tech is underway as the strongest nations push the boundaries of science fiction to wage war with new ideas.
Governments are investing trillions in Star Trek-tech including teleportation, exoskeletons, aircraft capable of spaceflight, directed energy weapons and increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence.
And squaddies on the ground may be the first to experience the changing face of war.

America’s biggest rival Russia – who already seems poised to trigger a global conflict “overnight” – are looking to bring Iron Man style battle suits into the field within the decade.
Their exoskeleton is said to be able to allow soldiers to carrying 300kg of equipment and run and jump at superhuman speeds.
Aleksandr Kulish, from Russia’s United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation, said: “I think in about five years we will have a neuro-interface to control exoskeletons and prosthetics through the brain’s electrical impulses.”
While the US Army has developed its own powered mech suits to allow their troops to walk longer distances and carry more weight.

Footsoldiers may be dropped completely though with armies turning to advanced robots which might do the fighting for them – with drone controlled vehicles and AI driven soldiers.
British defence firm BAE Systems is currently working on prototypes of an autonomous system to seek out sea mines for the Royal Navy.
Artificial intelligence could already be on the cusp of rendering ace fighter plane pilots obsolete.
An American military drone pilot prototype – dubbed Alpha the AI – defeated a pair of US Air Force pilots with ease in a simulation carried out by the University of Cincinnati and defence giants Psibernetix – describing him as a “deadly opponent”.
The researchers wrote: “Not only could he not score a kill against it, he was shot out of the air every time after protracted engagements.”

Russia are developing a robotic tank called the Uran-9.
The pint-sized machine is initially not intended to replace main battle tanks, but serves as a proof of concept for automating the lumbering war machines.
Boris Simakin, head of Rosoboronexport, said: “Russian developers possess all of the required competencies to create modern military robotics.”
